His record at Washington is a somewhat less stellar 55-26, but he finished (or tied) first in the Pac-12 north division for three straight years, and won the conference championship twice. Why It Might Work: He has head coaching experience from his time at Indiana and is at least familiar with the challenges of running a Big Ten program. Hes never worked west of Illinois, and hed be asked to live west of Iowa in the Great Plains. He has solid Midwest ties and knows how to recruit gems. Hes been under the big lights of a major college football program, and may be looking for another chance to be on that kind of stage again. He also beat Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. He did exceptionally well with very little. I try to make the case for each one. He regularly punches above his weight and has out-schemed and out-coached Nebraska on multiple occasions. Instead, it's seen a far-flung outpost in a league that suddenly boasts a presence in New York, Chicago and soon Los Angeles. He also would not be completely new to the Big Ten and might be more prepared in his second go-round. Doeren might be the most underrated coach in the Power 5. Patterson knows Nebraska and its culture; he would come out of the box blazing on the recruiting trail. The latest were internal issues with Jacksonville Jaguars players last season. He got national attention in 2020 when he led Iowa State to its first division crown, including an upset of Oklahoma in the regular season (although they later lost the rematch in the Big 12 championship).
